It all began with a phone call. In early July 2018, Thomas received an unexpected call from none other than Jürgen Klopp, Liverpool FC’s charismatic manager. Klopp had a vision, a concern that he believed Thomas could address with his expertise. Liverpool’s throw-ins were far from ideal, and Klopp wanted to change that.
Thomas was invited to Liverpool’s legendary training facility, Melwood, for a meeting with Klopp. What was supposed to be a discussion turned into something extraordinary. Impressed by Thomas’s ideas and methods, Klopp gave him a unique opportunity – to coach 21 Premier League players the very next day.
Liverpool embraced Thomas’s coaching with enthusiasm. “The Long, Fast, and Clever Throw-In” became their mantra. The players and coaching staff dove into the world of precision throw-ins, analyzing their games and implementing innovative strategies.
The transformation was undeniable. In the 2018/19 season, Liverpool FC’s throw-ins underwent a dramatic makeover. Their possession on throw-ins under pressure soared from 45.4% to a remarkable 68.4%. Liverpool FC climbed from 18th place in the Premier League to the number 1 spot in that category. In Europe, they secured the coveted second position, second only to another team coached by Thomas, FC Midtjylland from Denmark.
During Thomas’s five-year journey with Liverpool, the club achieved unprecedented success. They lifted the Champions League, clinched the Premier League title, won the World Championship for club teams, and added prestigious trophies like the FA Cup and Carabao Cup to their collection.
